Well, well, well, Wisconsin’s capital city sure represents! A journey downtown on a crystal clear day, was well received by all! The city is a nice size, clean, filled with pleasant people, food trucks, shopping, music and beautiful government buildings!
The Capitol is huge! And gorgeous! The tallest building in Madison, there is a law that prohibits any building to be taller than the pillars you see above! Pretty cool idea, if you ask me. The golden Athena like goddess at the apex, wears a badger (state totem) topped helmet, holds a globe with a perched eagle who proudly wears a “W” for Wisconsin on its chest! She is 15 ft, 5″ of golden loveliness!
The square that surrounds the Capitol holds one of the largest farmers markets in the country every Saturday. The whole area is just really nice and has a friendly vibe. Another interesting detail about the Capitol is that it sits between to beautiful lakes. Monona and Mendota so it almost fees like you are on an island!
State Street runs from the Capitol to University of Wisconsin and houses tons of great restaurants, shops, bars and theaters! The university campus and government buildings intermingle thought out the entire city and it really works!
We were really impressed with the downtown area…not sure how it would be with 10′ of snow on the ground but on a slightly breezy, 80 degree day, it was just delightful!
Just across Lake Monona is Olin Park and this magnificent skyline view. Much like Minneapolis, there are plenty of parks and a celebrated outdoorsmen like feel.
Where there is water….there are the girls!
Not sure Gracie would make the world’s best lifeguard. Easily distracted and annoyed by being told to sit still…she is likely better off remaining a beach goer!
Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday!!
Since we were rained out last night, we did head across the street from Viking Village to Viking Park and explore the off leash dog park! Incidentally, the greater Madison area was voted in the top 10 dog friendly cities with 8 off leash areas and almost no leashed dog restrictions in any of the city parks! Happy Dogs for Wisconsin!!!
Next time though this area, I would love to see the northern part of both Wisconsin and Minnesota…rumor has it the areas are incredibly beautiful especially up by the Great Lakes!
(Honestly, I would come back for the cheese curds alone….what a dangerous addiction!)
Traveling to Illinois tomorrow! Stay tuned….
