A short drive, a totally different world, and a pleasant surprise as we roll just 60 miles into Viking Village Campground!
A gorgeous tree lined drive entrance.
Viking Village was once the Martin Luther Orphan’s Home for children left alone by disease, war, or proverty back in 1889. Over time as many as 90-200 children called this lovely place home!
In 1925 fire destroyed the original girl’s dormitory & nursery but this building seen here, was built as its replacement in 1927.
Most of the original buildings are still in tact! The property for this facility was donated by Gyermund and Rebecca Skaalen, Norwegian immigrants (this will be important on a later adventure), and created a totally self sufficient facility that grew all its own crops, raised its own livestock and provided education to all its residents! Awesome!
These many acres are beautiful! The campground has 77 spacious spots and was established in 1979. It is one of the nicest places we have stayed with regards to its peaceful surroundings, cleanliness, charm….and of course, squirrels.
There are trails though all the crops! We are running though the soybeans! Little do the girls know but there is an off-leash dog park with swimming right across the street too!!! Bonus Points!
Dried soy beans and corn are used for seed and feed….the colors are an early indicator that fall is on the way and they are quite pretty in their own way!
She NEVER stops…..
Squirrels!!!!!! Lousy photos but still fun!
I soooo wish the girls were in focus but it was all I could do to take the photo and try to catch up with them at same time!!! Look how high Gracie can jump!!!!
So….there’s a duck head in the middle of the meadow. I was hoping for a cool story or significance but, it’s just a duck head made from an old tree stump. It’s pretty hilarious!
This fantastic park has full hook-ups, our tv and our internet work (can we get a hallelujah! It has been a while to have everything working) plus they have a great pool and putt putt course (minus the life sized cows of the last campground). This place gets and A+!
With a great humanitarian history, lovely surroundings and…..squirrels. Everyone is happy!!!!
Excited for a good adventure tomorrow! Stay tuned….
