This IS White Sands National Monument!
Holy cow! Isn’t this something!
Some of these dunes are 30-40ft tall! A challenge to climb up and slide down. The park will rent sleds so you can ride them!
You can hike with dogs on leash (and off when no one is looking in the way back of the park!) by following the poles placed around the park and the trail goes up and down these magnificent dunes towards the mountains. Quite an undertaking! Took About 4 hours! There are smaller more manageable trails too…get a map!
This is also a missile sight. Yes, live missiles from Holloman AFB! They close the whole place (duh!) including the highway getting there for a few days each month so they can launch & blow them up!
Also, the place where they detonated the first atomic bomb is close but it is only open 2 days of the year.
Just in case your wondering; the sand is made of gypsum. It is compact and hard in some places and just as soft and light as Florida beaches in other places!
A must do! It is like no place else on earth and while remote, worth the drive…I promise.
